Bon Jovi: What do you got.... when you ain't got free speech

Livin' on a PrayerImage via WikipediaBon Jovi is releasing a Greatest Hits CD this November.

YEAH!

Or is that Boo because I'll spend another $20 or more (I usually buy the import discs via Amazon) for a CD with Who Says You Can't Go Home on it.

It's a full retrospective of their career, kind of like Crossroads but with the last 15 years added to it.
So yesterday was the big day and they released the first single off the Greatest Hits titled, What Do you got.  I guess this means no more additional tracks off the Circle since When We Were Beautiful wasn't really released as a single.  I really wanted Love's The Only Rule and the exceptional Brokenpromiseland but I guess not.

If you haven't heard it yet here's my take:
I was VERY hopeful that they would release a few rock tracks, some things that didn't make The Circle or things like Put the Boy Back in Cowboy off the Lost Highway CD which was by far one of the better tracks (yet was very un-Bon Jovi which is why it probably wasn't released in the US and I still don't know why some country artist hasn't recorded it).

But no, we get the very Adult Contemporary Friendly What Do You Got.  Once again just like We Weren't Born To Follow there's no guitar solo.  Once again there's Jon subtly or not so subtly politicizing (Maybe i'm a dreamer, but I still believe I believe in hope, I believe the change can get us off our knees Keep drinking the Kool Aid Jon) and quite frankly I don't like it.  It's like Jon is trying to be the working Man's Bono.  But the working man today can't afford $150 concert tickets.  The lyrics are inspirational but they've always written songs that make you believe in yourself and your abilities to over come.

Yet something is missing.  Whether it's Richie's guitar work or maybe honesty (cause honestly it's nice to preach about how nothing else matters in life as long as you have love in your life when you have a couple of million sitting in a bank account somewhere).

I almost feel like this is Livin on a Prayer 2.0 just without the two characters struggling to make it or not (you live for the fight if that's all that you got...)

Feel free to check out Glenn Osrin's article from the Examiner on the new single: New Bon Jovi single, 'What Do You Got' disappoints and then read the comments, some of them are not very nice.  I've been a fan for 25 years met a lot of great fans and tweet with many of you a regular basis and some of the comments are really awful.  It wasn't like he said he was going to go to Jon's house and hold him the band, and his family hostage at gun point until a new (and more rock orientated) album got released, he just said he was disappointed and he gave a few reasons why.  If you're going to disagree with someone at least make your statement in a mature fashion, and don't get all emotional and tell the writer that you hate them because he stated his opinion.  There are many comments that say, "I disgaree with you I like it."  Great but don't get all "OMG, I hate you I will never read your articles again, you suck, I hope you DIAF"
