Bon Jovi: In my own words, Jon Bon Jovi

Some stuff from Jon.

Musician Jon Bon Jovi of Bon Jovi Source: AFP

He's survived the success and excess of three decades as a rock god, yet the 48-year-old credits being a good father and husband as his greatest triumph.

~~~~~~~~~~
A band is like a marriage or a family.
It was hard for us early on because, like in a new relationship, we were trying to figure each other out. You had to be careful about what you said or did, because sometimes people interpret things incorrectly. Everybody has their idiosyncrasies, but when you’ve been around each other for nearly three decades, as we have, you know what they are, so you don’t misinterpret them.
~~~~~~~~~~

Richie [Sambora, Bon Jovi’s guitarist] and I are closer than brothers.
There have been periods of love and less than love between us, but I don’t think there was ever a period
of disrespect. He’s had a few setbacks. He’s been through a difficult divorce [from Heather Locklear], he’s had other personal problems [with substance abuse], but he got through it. I’ve spent more of my life with him than I have without him. That’s a statement.

~~~~~~~~~~
I was playing bars at 16.
Doing that gave me the opportunity to cut my chops. I also had the innocence and naïvety of youth to believe music was a real possibility. If you came from New Jersey and saw Bruce Springsteen do it, you thought maybe you could, too.
~~~~~~~~~~

During Bon Jovi’s big success in the mid-’80s, I wasn’t sane.
When Slippery When Wet was big, I was doing too many things I shouldn’t have been. I wasn’t looking after myself. I was physically exhausted and worried about what came tomorrow, instead of enjoying today. If I were a manager, I’d tell a kid that had huge success to go to bed and call me in a year.

~~~~~~~~~~
At that time, even my parents started asking me for advice.
I thought, no, no, I’m still a 25-year-old idiot – I don’t know anything. Suddenly, I’m signing cheques, thinking, where did that sort of money come from? I went from being a singer in a band to the head of a corporation.
~~~~~~~~~~

Bon Jovi isn’t a democracy.
I make the decisions and that’s the way it is. I have to live with the good and bad of the outcome, because the decision lies with me. But I’m willing to accept that to have control. Looking back, there isn’t much I wouldn’t do again, except maybe some of the hairstyles, and a few of the outfits.

~~~~~~~~~~
If you play a Bon Jovi song in a bar anywhere in the world, people will sing it.
That’s beyond comprehension to me. I was just a kid strumming a tennis racquet in my bedroom. Having songs that people know the world over is crazy. I’m very grateful and humbled by it.
~~~~~~~~~~

I really don’t care about fame.
I was on the beach with my kids the other day, and nobody cared. You can be so full of yourself, you tell everyone what you do. Or, you can think, that’s just what I did last night; that’s my job.

~~~~~~~~~~
I’m blessed with four healthy kids and a wife who tolerates me.
That, to me, is success. My wife knew me before I was ‘me’. Our [21-year] marriage is up and down, like any relationship. It is what it is. It isn’t perfect, but I got it right the first time. I don’t even make jokes about it any more. I’m lucky and I wouldn’t trade it.
~~~~~~~~~~

My kids are aware of the Lindsay Lohans of the world.
They think that sort of life is crappy and don’t want anything to do with it. On the other hand, sometimes there are people in my house and the kids will say, “Wow, really? You?” But,
in general, we keep them out of the spotlight.

~~~~~~~~~~
My eight-year-old son, Jake, has ‘it’.
He should be an actor. But I don’t push him; my kids have to find it on their own. My daughter, Stephanie, is 17 and she has the ability to be something, if she chooses. But growing up in the shadow of a famous parent isn’t fair. You have to want to do it.
~~~~~~~~~~

If you love what you do, chances are, it’s going to resonate.
If you write a song that means something to somebody because they can relate to it, or it becomes a part of the patchwork of their life and marks a memory of a time and place when they heard it, that’s success. But the accomplishments, the number-ones, the sold-out arenas – it’s all horse sh*t. None of that matters.

~~~~~~~~~~
I’m a romantic optimist.
I believe in the common good. I’m liberal-minded, open to co-existing and I don’t care if you’re gay or straight, black or white, Jewish, Muslim or Christian. Because I’ve been so blessed, I don’t see why others can’t achieve and be and do. Some people call that naïvety, others call it a promise of hope.
MY FAVORITE BON JOVI SONG EVER!!!
Oct. 22 2010 - 6:25 pm
Thousands of Baron Capital investors crowded into the Metropolitan Opera House this afternoon. They sat through a panel discussion among Baron’s fund managers and listened to its billionaire founder Ron Baron tell some of his personal stories of his success. But most of them were likely waiting to find out who today’s secret performer was going to be. Already Diana Ross and John Cougar Mellencamp had performed during lunch.
The guy sitting next to me whispered, “I bet it’s Bono,” after a slide featuring the U2 front man flashed on the screen with a quote about America being a state of mind, not a country.
Suspense built when Baron, who grew up in Asbury Park, NJ, and spent summers working odd jobs on the Jersey Shore, said he had picked a fellow Jersey man.
Could it truly be? Could we be lucky enough to see Bruce Springsteen in concert while covering an investment conference? Sensing our excitement, Baron quickly quashed our hopes explaining it would not be the Boss.
Instead the 4,000 guests crowded into the opera house were serenaded by “the more handsome guy from New Jersey” as Jon Bon Jovi introduced himself. He performed such favorites as “You Give Love a Bad Name” and also gave his rendition of “Hallelujah.”
Baron always keeps the identity of his performers secret from even his closest confidantes. Over the years, celebrities like Neil Diamond, Elton John, Bette Midler, Paul Simon, Billy Crystal and Rod Stewart have all headlined his events. Jerry Seinfeld performed twice, supposedly the second time as a replacement for someone who got sick just a few days before the event. One news report said Baron’s and Seinfeld’s moms are friends; the comedian is also an East Hampton neighbor of his, according to Baron, who spent more than $100 million on his 40-acre estate in 2007.
Baron, whose parents wanted him to be a doctor, got his start as a biochemistry teaching fellow and then as a patent examiner in the U.S. patent office while attending George Washington law school. He became a securities analyst in 1970 and started his own firm in 1982. He has been throwing these investment conferences for 19 years. He pays for the entire day, inviting all of his investors as his guests to hear from portfolio companies and enjoy the free entertainment. He plans the event for months. He was already giddy about it this summer when I went to visit him at his mid-town office, as a few employees sat tasting deserts for the event in the conference room.
He certainly seemed to be having fun up on stage. One highlight was when an audience member asked him to elaborate on his college experience. Baron squinted to see who had asked the question and realized it was his frat buddy. Bet his parties these days blow those old ones away. As one person said, “Ron is probably the most optimistic person I’ve met. If you had his life you would be too.”
I don’t but for a few hours I could imagine.
You'd think that as someone who writes for Forbes she would know that Dessert is spelt with 2 SS's cause you want more Dessert and less time in the Desert.
Bon Jovi: It's an Idea that will never happen, Bon Jovi plays each album in concert
Last weekend during our Gutter Girls weekend we were discussing the Bon Jovi shows we've been to over the years and songs we've heard surprises, etc.
One of the things we all thought was a great idea was a series of shows at a small venue with minimal production and during these shows Bon Jovi played 1 album in its entirety.
Now here's the thing when you buy your ticket it tells you what album is going to be played that night.  So if you don't want to hear 7800 and you buy the ticket to the 7800 night, its your own damned fault, scalp the ticket or keep your mouth shut.  And yes Jon does have to show up that night.
Now for us fans who are obsessive there should be a "box set" of tickets where you can get all the shows (for a discount cause times are tough they're just getting tougher, whole world is rough its just getting rougher...  Oh wait that's Bruce.  Sorry) and you get a little collectible box where all your ticket stubs can be displayed like the ultimate Bon Jovi fan badge of honor, I saw all the albums played in their entirety and lived to tell the tale.
Of course Crossroads and the GH are exempt because you know they're not full studio albums.
So what do you think?
I doubt it would happen, but it's a good idea and has anything like this ever been done before?  I know Bruce played specific albums during his residence at MSG but was it on the ticket stub?
Which shows would you be particularly excited about?
Bon Jovi :Bon Jovi Is the prize worth 'Global Icon' from MTV?
The always awesome Amit (@tigrs99 on twitter) pointed this out.  And Rolling Stone has a lot people who decide who goes into the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame, if this is the global feeling, things don't look good, which is "Alright" since doesn't millions and millions of units sold and millions and millions of fans around the world mean more than some hall of fame?
Jon?
From the Spanish version of Rolling Stone (Translated by Google, Sorry No Habla Espanol):
The music channel will present the award at a gala in Madrid for being "one of the most beloved rock bands and more influential over the past 30 years." Are five reasons why this is a wrong decision. By Ivar Muñoz-Rojas
"It is clear that Bon Jovi has reached iconic status worldwide as one of the most popular rock bands, most beloved and influential over the past 30 years. "These words referred to the Executive Vice President of Music and area MTV talent, Bruce Gillmer, the group will receive the award 'Global Icon' in Madrid on November 7, at a gala organized by the chain in Spain is leading the music mogul. He argues that the award, the first which gives the multinational brand in its history, gives those in New Jersey because, in his words, "For years, MTV and Bon Jovi fans have given their unique and incredible experience." The band will come to the capital to collect this recognition of spirit as big as open. But is it deserved? Here are five arguments against this decision.
1. His best moments were nearly 30 years. We saw it in its passage through the festival Rock in Rio Madrid 2010, last June: a concert by Bon Jovi now and Jacuzzi to the past, that movie in which some colleagues are quickly an unexpected trip to the 80. That is, when the band attacks with live Runaway or Bad medicine -those hits of the eighties filled with lacquer, energy and good tunes, the cries of fivefold, when interpreting recent songs off viewers. Bon Jovi was detached from reality and present at the same time by the hair was cut for his album Keep the Faith, 1992.
2. Songs are too similar to each other. Okay, for 90 Bon Jovi stayed on the charts, most Taliban say in this matter, but always mellifluous ballad at that stage that gave success to the group (and some surgery , will be assumed). How many would be able to differentiate Bed of roses to Always, then their biggest hits in five seconds? Because, besides, eternal melodramatic, his ballads are very similar to each other. And it is worth mentioning as an example of success moved, revitalizing and recent It's my life, from their album Crush: progress has, but already has ten years and start with vocoder (the pileup that robotized human voice), is modeled that of Livin 'on a Prayer, its most successful (fourteen years younger).
3. Say you like Bon Jovi is marginal. With this band of mature passes as with former super sales as Roxette, Bryan Adams or, national, modesty aside, times have changed (as they said in one of his biggest hits Celtic Other that fall into this category), and Bon Jovi have left a halo beater long. An example material: H & M we can buy shirts with air vintage other glories as Guns N 'Roses, Motörhead or Madonna, not of our players, however. That theorem that everything is cyclical fashion breaks with Bon Jovi and 120 million records sold. By the way, how many current bands to mention Bon Jovi as a major influence?
4. 50% of the group remains unknown to the masses. Bon Jovi is a clear example of metonymy, that figure of speech with which they become part of the whole (for example, we wash the car when it comes to your body). As we do not know if Jarabe de Palo is Pau Dones or this band, or Revolver is the same or not Carlos Goñi, for many uninitiated Bon Jovi is synonymous with its Rubiales and spunky singer, Jon Bon Jovi, of 48. And this is an error: the name behind five people. Although it is true that Tico Torres (57, drums) and David Bryan (48, keyboards), who have been in the ranks of the group since its inception, could walk quietly, and at rush hour, and the Gran Via without anyone recognize them. And that is not itself an icon.
5. They are the worst icon ever. And speaking of icons: the symbol for the band and is on the cover of Have a nice day (his ninth album with new songs of 2005) is nonsense even greater than, for example, the Metallica name without his arrows (as presented by the band on Load, album of 1996). Music Video In the title track to this job teenagers flooded, with sprays and stickers, the city (as they did, but in reality, punks Black Flag in Los Angeles, in the early 80). It all ends with a concert sprawling, unplanned, to blush a little and produces a similar feeling of seeing your mother with two glasses of most New Year's Eve. And that is not worthy of an icon.
Erratum: In fact, as you say in various comments, the effect you hear in the outbursts of the songs It's My Life and Livin 'on a prayer is made with a vocoder , but with a talk box. On the other hand, to prevent confusion that induce the text, we refer logo is only used with Bon Jovi album Have a nice day, which is not the only one who has used the band: the classic heart pierced by a dagger remains a hallmark of the group.
Bon Jovi: Bon Jovi to recieve Global Icons award
Ok, I seem to remember every video on BonJovi.com starting with the phrase Global Icons.  Am I right?  Why does this whole thing smell of Ego Stroke?  (although Jon I am available to stroke your ego anytime.  I'm just saying.)
Bon Jovi will receive a Global Icon prize at next month's MTV Europe Music Awards in Madrid, the music channel said on Tuesday.
Photo By Me
Bruce Gillmer, executive vice president of music and talent at MTV Networks International called Bon Jovi "one of the most beloved and influential rock bands of all time." They are winners of the inaugural Global Icon award.
The band will perform in Madrid on November 7 at a show to be broadcast live on MTV websites. Most of the categories are decided by a public online vote.
Among those set to perform at one of pop music's biggest nights outside the United States are Shakira, Linkin Park, Kings of Leon, Ke$ha and Katy Perry.
According to MTV, Jon Bon Jovi, Richie Sambora, David Bryan and Tico Torres have sold over 125 million albums, performed over 2,700 concerts in over 50 countries to 35 million fans and were the number one touring act in the world in 2008.
Is this just a conciliation prize in case they don't get inducted into the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame?  Or are they making their case, which won't matter anyway.
Bon Jovi: Jon joins Sugarland on stage... *sigh*
So Sugarland had a show in NYC for AMEX and Jon showed up to sing MY FAVORITE BON JOVI SONG EVER (OMG this sentence is dripping with sarcasm).
Ok, does anyone know how many It's Alrights Jon does on average during WSYCGH? Cause it seems excessive too me. After the 3rd one it's no longer Alright, it's just annoying. I was making cut throat motions Friday night I think each cut throat motion I did that he clearly saw because I was like King Kong amongst the munchkins from the Wizard of Oz (bunch of short Bon Jovi fans in Gulf Shores) got an additional 10 or so 'It's Alright's'.
But "it's Alright" cause Richie clearly saw the Richie Show Us Moose sign and cracked up (but wouldn't look at us when we would hold it up there after).
We were all surprised when Jon out of the Blue proposed to Richie (during Bad Medicine).  We don't know what  Richie's answer was though.  I expect my invitation in the mail soon.  LOL
Richie gave Jon his answer just before SYDIM aka Lay Your Hands on Me.  Awww they're going to make the Sexless Marriage Legit In IA MA and NJ.  LOL
Bon Jovi: Richie Sambora: Richie's New Guitar!
Lots of Richie stuff today.  Don't think I don't take care of my Richie girls.  Thanks to Amit for pointing this out.  Thanks to Christi for pointing out during the show, that during Whole Lotta Leaving that Richie was playing a wireless guitar which he doesn't like to play, but here's the story on why, and a picture I took because even before Christi pointed it out I recognized that this was a new and special guitar.  The pictures of Richie below were taken by me, please credit me accordingly.  Thanks.
The state of Alabama are celebrating 2011 as the Year of Alabama Music and have commissioned the Gibson Custom Shop to craft a guitar in the shape of the state.
Bob Harrison, from the state’s marketing agency, explained that the idea is to use the guitar over the next year to bring attention to Alabama’s rich musical tradition.
“We want people to be aware of Alabama’s musical legacy from blues to country, Muscle Shoals, jazz and so on,” he said.
Television spots and print ads will feature musicians playing the Alabama guitar. Also, bands and artists playing in Alabama next year will be offered the opportunity to play the unique guitar at their concerts.
