“Whether I am in the studio or on the stadium stage,
these are the strings that connect me to my
audience and my guitar to me."
Richie Sambora is one of music's most talented and respected songwriters, singers, guitarists and producers. As a founding member of Bon Jovi, he has toured the world and collected over 68 gold and platinum albums. In 1998, Sambora released his second solo album, Undiscovered Soul, produced by Don Was featuring contributions by Chuck Leavell of The Rolling Stones, Rami Jaffee of The Wallflowers and Steven Tyler of Aerosmith.
Born in Perth Amboy, New Jersey, and raised in Woodbridge, Sambora got his first guitar in 1971 when he was 13, and started playing in bands only three years later. A diversified music listener, Sambora comes from a background of The Beatles, Eric Clapton, Johnny Winter, Led Zeppelin and the blues, and had the opportunity to explore all of his musical avenues while making his first solo album, Stranger In This Town. A single from the album, Mr. Bluesman, was inspired by Clapton who even agreed to play lead guitar on the track, fulfilling a lifetime dream of Sambora's. Sambora is a self-taught musician and plays numerous instruments such as guitar, piano, bass, drums, trumpet, saxophone and accordion.
In his career with Bon Jovi, Richie Sambora has co-written music that resulted in sales of over 120 million albums worldwide, of which more than 34 platinum titles were sold in the U.S. alone. He has performed more than 2,600 concerts in over 50 countries for more than 34 million fans. The Lost Highway World Tour ranked as 2008’s #1 top-selling tour. Bon Jovi are currently on a 30-country, 135-show tour in support of their latest release, The Circle.
Today, Sambora and the rest of Bon Jovi continue to have an enormous influence on innumerable young bands seeking to follow in their footsteps. Bon Jovi have always been steadfast in following their own instincts, ignoring obvious trends and providing a model for other bands and musicians just starting out on their careers.
