Bon Jovi rocks Perth's socks off

In the first leg of Bon Jovi's tour of Australia, Perth was treated to a high energy performance at Patersons Stadium.

Patersons Stadium in Perth was packed with long-loving fans of rock superstar Jon Bon Jovi last night as the band kicked off their Australian tour with one almighty rocking gig.

Wearing a leather/snakeskin shirt unbuttoned to reveal his manly chest, tight black pants with added rock star sparkle and his trademark sexy stare, Bon Jovi lead the band through a set that spanned their three-decade career.

During The Circle world tour, the band will perform 135 shows in 30 countries. Having already played to more than 35 million music lovers, a slick production heavy on rock and boasting a few magical moments was to be expected. They delivered.

A massive stage set-up greeted fans, with a huge screen showcasing every smirk and strut the charismatic lead singer performed to a crowd of faithful fans, some of whom had followed the rocking legends around the globe, and others bringing long-stemmed red roses to throw to the object of their desire.

The excitement was obvious even before the lights at the stadium dimmed, with talk of a lookalike Jon Bon Jovi walking through the crowd tricking fans causing an early scene.

The band kicked off with Blood on Blood, and it was not long before the crowd was all riled up and ready for some big ballads and rocking tunes.

They performed most of the classics – minus Blaze of Glory and Bed of Roses – for an enthralled audience, yet those of the 38,000 strong crowd in the far stands took some encouragement to get to their feet.

"Get up out of your seats, I came a long way to be here tonight!" Bon Jovi called to fans sitting far away.

"Just because the sun went down doesn't mean we can't turn up the heat!"

You Give Love A Bad Name, It's My Life and current single No Apologies got the concert pumping.

Showing off a cheeky side, Bon Jovi stopped a rendition of I'll Sleep When I'm Dead to perform a strut-heavy impersonation of Mick Jagger, with the band enjoying a rendition of the Rolling Stones' hit Start Me Up for a bit of a laugh.

Lead guitarist Richie Sambora, wearing a military-inspired outfit complete with crazy hat, demonstrated a voice as strong as Bon Jovi's by performing Lay Your Hands on Me while the frontman left the stage.

But it wasn't all high-wattage rock, with a magical moment occurring when Bon Jovi, Sambora, drummer Tico Torres and keyboardist David Bryan left the main stage to pop up in the middle of the crowd and perform a pared-back rendition of Something for the Pain – Torres using portable percussion instruments and Bryan on a piano accordion.

After two hours the band retired backstage for a short break. They were soon back for an encore which blew the crowd away, finishing - predictably but satisfyingly - with karaoke mega hit Livin' On A Prayer.

The crowd, of course, went wild.

If anyone was wondering what keeps the band trucking around the world, Bon Jovi's interaction with female fans explains a lot. Throughout the gig the charismatic frontman made startling eye contact with numerous women, who lapped up the attention.

One woman in the pit directly in front of the stage screamed "I love you" as he sang into her eyes.

"You think you love me," Bon Jovi told her. "You don't know me. I could be hazardous to your health. People ask me why I still do this. That's why!"
